Car Camping Essentials: The Only Checklist You Need
Beacon Team · February 1, 2026
After years of camping across national parks and state parks, here's the gear list we actually use — no fluff, no affiliate links, just what works.
Shelter & Sleep
- Tent (3-season for most trips; check the size — a "2-person" tent is tight for 2 adults)
- Sleeping bag rated 10-20°F below expected low temperature
- Sleeping pad (R-value 3+ for spring/fall; R-value 1-2 for summer)
- Pillow (compressible camp pillow or stuff sack filled with clothes)
Kitchen
- Camp stove + fuel canister
- Lighter + backup lighter
- Cooler with ice/ice packs
- Water bottles (1L per person minimum)
- Dishes: 1 pot, 1 pan, plates/bowls, utensils
- Biodegradable camp soap + sponge
- Trash bags (pack out everything)
- Paper towels
Clothing (adjust for season)
- Layers: base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell
- Extra socks (the most underrated gear item)
- Hat and sunglasses
- Camp shoes/sandals for around the site
- Rain jacket even if the forecast looks clear
Safety & Comfort
- Headlamp + extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Fire starter + firewood (buy local to prevent pest spread)
- Camp chairs
- Multi-tool or knife
Often Forgotten
- Reservations printed/saved offline (cell service is unreliable at many campgrounds)
- Campground check-in time (usually 2-4 PM; check-out by 11 AM-12 PM)
- Quiet hours (typically 10 PM - 6 AM)
- Cash for firewood vendors
- Earplugs (generators, neighbors, nature)
The key to good car camping is not overpacking. If you haven't used it in the last 3 trips, leave it home.
